A violent weekend on the streets of Chicago left 29 individuals shot and four dead. The first fatal shooting took place Friday afternoon in the city’s Rogers Park neighborhood. The brutal weekend of violence rolled on, with two Chicago Police officers suffering gunshot wounds during a routine traffic stop and a woman gunned down in the city’s West Garfield Park neighborhood. An 18-year-old man was found in an alley in the 5600 block of South Wabash. A fourth victim was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 4600 block of West Jackson Boulevard.

Police said that the majority of the shootings were thought to be gang related. The first fatal shooting claimed the life of 18-year-old Alante Vallejo, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds to his back and torso. Police were called after neighbors heard the shots, but the teen was unresponsive and pronounced dead at Presence St. Francis Hospital in Evanston.

In the West Garfield Park neighborhood, a 22-year-old woman was shot late Friday night in a domestic dispute. Identified as Carnesha Fort, the woman was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead.

Early Saturday morning, another 18-year-old victim was found dead in South Wabash. Police responded to reports of gunfire and found Brian Weekly unresponsive. A 20-year-old man was also brought to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital in critical condition.

The fourth victim was an unidentified 35-year-old man, taken to Loretto Hospital and pronounced dead with multiple gunshot wounds.

Other acts of violence included a 27-year-old man shot twice in the hand, a 21-year-old man shot in the leg while walking on South Harvard Avenue, a 27-year-old man shot up in the leg and neck, and multiple other victims – the majority of them males under the age of 30 – that were hit in drive-by shootings.

The wave of gang violence included the shooting of two police officers who had pulled over a vehicle in the 9300 block of South Wallace Avenue. Police said they pulled the car over because they suspected that the individuals inside had a weapon. Malik Shabazz, a 29-year-old Far South Side man, was charged with five counts of attempted murder.

Reports the Chicago Tribune: “As officers approached the vehicle, Shabazz fired several shots from inside the car, hitting the officers, police said in a release from the Chicago Police Department Office of News Affairs. Police returning fire shot Shabazz, who remains hospitalized, police said…. The shooting happened after gang enforcement officers tried to stop a car that was heading north on Wallace, police said. The officers had their emergency lights activated and had exited their vehicle when a man inside the car started shooting, Chicago Police Department First Deputy Superintendent Al Wysinger said.”
